Anonymous asked: "On occasion a writer will do this sort of a scene. And I hate it every time it comes up.I hate it because it’s not genuine, it’s all about playing to the cheap seats, to the long-time readers who understand the tropes of comics, and pointing out that the characters are just lines on paper." What did you think of Peter David working it into X-Factor as a plot point with Siryn and Banshee?

I’d have liked it better if I hadn’t seen him do the exact same bit with Rick Jones years before—a character for whom you could more readily make the argument that they would understand and acknowledge the rules of the fictional universe they inhabit.

So no, didn’t like it. It’s a scene for readers who are cynical and have read too many comic books, rather than for human beings.

See, and just after praising Brevoort for being good at his job, I’m reminded of one of the many reasons I dislike him personally.

Ohh, no – you should never, NEVER write for your fans!  What a terrible idea!  I also love that he’s calling people who read lots of comics and might not be the brightest of optomists freaking nonhuman.  What a dick move.
